Fun Ways To Stay Fit in the Winter

Fitness is a year-round thing, even when the weather doesn’t cooperate. Many Pennsylvanians relish outdoor fun in the snow, while others may prefer to hunker down at home. Do your best to remain active with these suggestions for fun ways to stay fit in the winter.

Bundle up for Skating, Skiing or Snowshoeing

You can keep up your outdoor fitness activities if you’re dressed properly for the weather. Everyone who lives in northern climates knows about layering, but how you layer makes a big difference.

The layer closest to your skin should wick away moisture. Cotton isn’t good for that, as it tends to stay wet. The next layer should retain warmth but allow moisture to escape, while the top layer should keep out wind and precipitation. Don’t forget a hat and warm gloves, and wear something bright or reflective if you’re heading out for a walk or a jog on a cloudy day.

Now you’re ready for some outdoor fun: break out the skates, cross country skis, or snowshoes, and head out to a park or preserve. You’ll enjoy fresh air at an appropriate social distance.

If there isn’t a suitable venue near you, a classic family snowball fight will raise everyone’s heart rate, and it’s a lot of fun, too—as long as everyone plays fair and doesn’t pack their snowballs too tightly. Keep it fluffy and light for the most entertainment. Or build a snowman with heavier, wetter snow.

Indoor Activities

With gyms closed, you need to get creative to stay fit at home in the winter. Make a game of climbing stairs multiple times. Set up a television monitor connected to the internet in the basement, and follow workout routines on YouTube. All you need is a mat and some dumbbells.

You can also turn your basement into a rec room with active table games. Table tennis is a healthy indoor sport that’s fun for the whole family. Convertible tables can provide three games in one to keep everyone on their feet and moving.

You can also try putting on some music and dancing. Fitness comes from moving your body through space. No matter how you do it, you’ll be achieving your goal of keeping fit throughout the winter months.
